Background

Water for People India is a non-profit organization which supports people of developing countries to improve their quality of life by promoting of locally sustainable drinking water sources, sanitation facilities and health and hygiene programs. We believe that access to safe water and adequate sanitation are basic human rights and can help put an end to needless suffering and mortality from water related preventable diseases.

Water for People India initiated its operations in West Bengal in 1996 in Nadia and North 24 Parganas districts. Consistent with the global vision and mission, we exist to promote the development of high-quality drinking water and sanitation services, accessible to all, and sustained by strong communities, businesses, and governments. Our organizational values are: accountability, courage, empowerment, partnership and transparency. Water For People India programs have been implemented in 26 districts in the states of West Bengal, Bihar, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Odisha and Assam.

In all, nearly 1.2 million people have been reached through community drinking water and sanitation, WASH in public institutions and market led approaches to sanitation. By 2023, Water For People India programs aim to directly benefit 2.7 million people. We aim to build capacities at the district level which will contribute to organizational commitments, thereby indirectly benefitting 14.8 million people. Water For People India implements programs through locally registered non- government organizations.

Scope of the Position

The Senior Manager Doner Relations and Partnership Development will work as a partnership Specialist for Water for People, India. This Position is based at Delhi.

The position holder will manage the fundraising initiatives of Water For People, India, coordinating with the program team and   guiding the communication team to conceptualize their strategies in line with the vision and mission of the Organisation.

The position holder will be expected to coordinate with global donor impact team, Grants Manager and with the India lead of communication & influence.

Senior Manager – Donor Relations and Partnership Development will report to the Country Director and duration of initial contract will be one year.

Job Summary

The Position will serve as point person for Donor Relations Partnership Manager for Water For People India. With a substantial fundraising and management experience, a talent for building relationships, and a proven track record in securing funds from statutory sources, foundations, trusts, Corporates and other major donors, the position will lead the achievement of fundraising goals. Overall responsibilities include:
  • Responsible for donor profiling along with engagement of senior leadership team: government, international and national donors (trusts, foundations, corporates and HNIs) supporting WASH sector programming in India and positioning Water For People for each of these audiences.
  • Coordinate with communication senior manager for supporting in developing the required communications and outreach annual plans (including digital strategy) and tasks as an organisation based on donor profiling.
  • Engage with the other senior management team members for organisational alignment and synergies for successful implementation of the fundraising strategy.
  • Lead the planning, development and execution of a fundraising strategy, aligned to Water For People – India Country Strategy.

Summary Of The Overall Job

  • Operationalize the fundraising portfolio defining the areas of required investment, key performance indicators and milestones and projected growth of income.
  • Continue to build on the brand recognition to further increase awareness and understanding of Water For People’s work and its mission among multi-disciplinary stakeholders
  • Improvise/create tools for donor on-boarding, retention and re-engagement of lapsed donors.
  • Manage and execute communications strategy to build awareness about Water for People’s mission, program approaches, achievements and learning from our work.
  • Position Water For People as a high-impact leader and innovator in the WASH sector among development sector players, social enterprises, Foundations and Trusts, Corporates and government
  • Lead PR/media initiatives and connect PR firm as needed with organisational initiatives and milestones to increase Water For People’s share of voice.
  • Manage timelines and teams, establish structure, processes, competencies, and systems to ensure the fundraising and communications function is fully equipped to establish and sustain new collaborations and relationships.
  • The position will work closely with the senior leadership to plan external representation in coordination and consultation.
  • The position will work closely with the senior leadership team for proposal development, preparation of presentations and outreach materials and any donor visits to the project sites.
Leading a Robust Donor Engagement
  • Undertake key steps and activities leading to the formulation of fundraising strategy and its execution plan.
  • Concurrent analysis of fundraising trends within the development sector, especially in similar INGOs/NGOs and incorporate these insights in the development of fundraising strategy.
  • Lead the development of annual plans and budgets for fundraising in alignment with the strategy, objectives and priorities of Water For People
  • Monitor the achievement of targets, ensure adherence to budgets, and implement tools for review and decision-making.
  • Collaborate with Water For People leadership team on developing the strategy and on best methods to share impact metrics and outcomes with external audiences
  • With direction from the Senior Leadership Team and Country Director, develop the Fundraising and Outreach strategy, based on funding need, thematic and geographical spread of programs.

Donor Engagement and Partnerships
  • Explore and establish a diversified funding source portfolio from sources that relate to our mission and untied funds.
  • Lead, support and manage the achievement of the annual fundraising targets.
  • Establish MIS related to donor data base, funds management, funding received, proposals submitted, etc.
  • Effective Key Account Management aimed at donor retention, and for developing and maintaining long-term strategic partnerships.
  • Donor engagement and proactive resolution of queries raised, effectively deal with sensitive/critical donor feedback, resolve issues, and manage sensitive relationships.
  • Regularly network and build relationships with the senior management of potential funding organizations and advocate for Water For People’s work.
  • Represent Water For People in forums and events, seminars and conferences, network with prospective donors and improve the visibility of the Water For People
  • Oversee/coordinate the timely development of quality proposals and concept notes for fundraising in coordination with the program and finance teams.
  • Engage in communication and engagement activities/initiatives such as donor visits, meetings etc.

Coordination & Innovation
  • Leading the partnership efforts of Water For People at country level and coordinating business development unit annual work plan.
  • Manage and execute business development functions and coordinate closely with media and campaigns, publishing, web, public affairs and events, external communications etc.
  • Providing required inputs to communication team for developing SOPs on standardization of designs, formats / templates, and themes for all internal and external communications.
  • Inspire and initiate various fundraising innovations by implementing alternate fundraising mechanism and applying digital knowledge to the interventions.

Grant Monitoring and Evaluation
  • Oversee the implementation of the acquired donor, ensuring timely monitoring and reporting system, to ensure there is accurate and high-quality reporting of activities for the donors.
  •  Ensure that WFP commitments to donors are followed up and properly reported.
  • Work with the Finance Director to monitor restricted donor fund expenditures against the annual organisational workplan.
  •  Support with fundraising presentations for the India finance board, risk and audit committee.
  • Monitor WFP compliance with all donor requirements.
  • Ensure the timeliness and quality of reports to donor ensuring they adhere to donor rules and regulations.
  • Analyse and discuss with Country Director and Finance Director monthly for all budget estimates and execution to ensure feasibility, consistency, allocated costs, and compliance,
  •  Work with budget holders and / or grant managers to follow up on amendments of grants proposals.
  •  Ensure that grant tracking tools and donor contact databases are up to date.
  •  Coordinate with finance team to ensure that complete record of all documentation generated for each grant and donor communications.
  •  Provide relevant content as required for WFP report developed by the communications team.
Tracking with Donor development activities
  • Build effective relationships with communication senior manager and leverage these relationships to ensure visibility for Water For People, including publishing of human interest stories.
  • Guide Content Development Officer to develop quality content for news stories, news features, profiling pieces and info- graphics, and their uptake in target media.

EDUCATION, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Education:
Master’s degree or equivalent from a reputed institute in Social Sciences, or/and economics
Experience:
  • 5 to 8 years of progressively responsible and relevant experience in resource mobilisation/communications/ public relations in the NGO sector and/ or CSR, Donor Relations.
  • Minimum 2 years’ out of total experience in successfully leading and managing a team.
  • Experience of independently developing and managing multiple donor/ stakeholder relationships.
  • Experience of developing and implementing fundraising activities and using social media to achieve business objectives.
  • Excellent organizational and multitasking skills, and ability to strategically prioritize, as the job requires the ability to manage diverse situations.
  • Experience on writing project applications in multi planner projects.
  • Enterprising and entrepreneurial abilities for establishing strong relationships with the Private sector, Corporates and Institutional Donors, representation of Water For People programs in strategic conferences and events etc.
  • Ability to work under pressure and deliver quality results.
  • Excellent oral and written communications in English and writing
  • Similar prior experience in social sector/water and sanitation sector is desirable.
